90's Themed Pottery Painting Idea's
1. The Central Perk Aesthetic (Friends)

Friends is arguably the ultimate 90s TV phenomenon, and its aesthetic is instantly recognisable and we’ve lost count of the number of ‘Friends’ inspired pieces we’ve seen painted in our studio.
The Frame Mug: Paint a mug purple and add the iconic yellow picture frame. Inside the frame, write a classic quote like "Could I BE any more caffeinated?" or "Pivot!" in the infamous Friends font!
The Couch Bowl: Paint a ceramic cereal bowl with the silhouette of the famous orange Central Perk couch, complete with the show’s multi-coloured dots between the letters of your name.
2. The "Saved by the Bell" Memphis Style

Nothing says early 90s quite like the geometric madness of the Memphis design trend. This style has had a massive interior design comeback recently.
The Design: Paint a white pastel background (like soft mint or pale lavender) on a large plate or vase. Over the top, layer pink triangles, electric blue zig-zags, and random black squiggles. It’s chaotic, vibrant, and looks incredibly modern on a flat plate.
3. Retro Tech: Floppy Disks & Game Boys
Before smartphones, we had chunky plastic tech. These boxy retro shapes translate perfectly onto flat ceramic surfaces.

The Floppy Disk Coaster: Paint square ceramic tiles to look like old-school 3.5" floppy disks. Use bright plastics colors and write a funny label on the sticker.
The Game Boy Planter: If you paint a square or rectangular plant pot, turn the front into a classic Nintendo Game Boy. Paint the grey retro screen, the red power light, and the iconic D-pad and red A/B buttons.
4. 90s Girl Power & Pop Music
The late 90s were ruled by bubblegum pop, girl groups, and iconic slogans.

The Spice Girls Plate: Dedicate a side plate to the ultimate 90s mantra. Paint a bold Union Jack flag (a nod to Geri’s famous dress) or use a retro bubble font to write "Girl Power" surrounded by tiny glittery stars.
The Britney "Oops" Mug: Paint a glossy red mug with the lyrics "Oops... I did it again"—perfect for your morning coffee or tea.
5. Smiley Faces & Yin-Yangs (The Grunge/Rave Era)

The mid-90s grunge and rave scenes brought us simple, bold symbols that are currently dominating high-street fashion brands like Urban Outfitters.
The Acid Yellow Smiley Face: Keep it simple on a classic mug or bowl. Paint the whole thing bright yellow with the iconic slightly melted, black smiley face.
The Yin-Yang Trinket Dish: Paint a small ring dish or shallow bowl with the classic black-and-white yin-yang symbol, a staple of 90s choker necklaces and skateboard culture.
6. Classic 90s Animated Characters
The 90s was a golden era for animation, launching massive franchises that are still dominating our cinema screens and wardrobes today. Characters from this era make for incredibly fun and nostalgic pottery designs.
The Toy Story Alien Bowl: Toy Story changed the animation game in 1995. Turn a ceramic bowl into one of the iconic green Pizza Planet Aliens. Paint the entire outside a vibrant lime green, add three large white eyes across the front, and a dark blue rim for their space suits. The claw dictates your design!
The Pokéball Mug or Plate: Pokémon burst onto the scene in the late 90s and is just as massive now. Paint a round plate or the front of a mug to look like a classic red-and-white Pokéball. It’s an easy, bold geometric design that looks incredibly striking once glazed and fired.
Tips for Painting Your 90s Masterpiece
Use Bright Glazes:
The 90s did not do subtle. Opt for our brightest pinks, electric blues, and sunny yellows.
Layer Your Colours:
For that classic 90s "WordArt" text look, paint your letters in one bright colour, then use a fine brush with black or dark purple to add a thick shadow outline on one side.
Trace Your Designs:
If you want your Friends font or geometric shapes to look perfectly crisp, print out the font or shapes and ask the studio team for our special paper so you can trace them onto the pottery to help lock in those clean lines.
