🌱Embrace Sustainability: Eco-Friendly Pottery Practices at Crafty Monkey ♻️

Crafty Monkey Eco Friendly Practices

In today’s world, adopting eco-friendly practices is more important than ever. At Crafty Monkey Pottery Studio, we are committed to sustainability and ensuring that our pottery practices are kind to the planet.

Have a look at how we incorporate eco-friendly methods into our pottery process and how you can join us in making a positive impact. Embrace Sustainability: Eco-Friendly Pottery Practices at Crafty Monkey let's break it down...

1. Recycling Clay

One of the key ways we promote sustainability is by recycling clay. Clay is a natural resource, and it’s essential to use it wisely. Here’s how we do it:

Reclaiming Scrap Clay: Any leftover or scrap clay from projects is collected and processed back into usable clay. This reduces waste and ensures that no clay goes unused.

Eco-Friendly Disposal: For clay that cannot be reclaimed, which is pretty much nil in our studio, we ensure it is disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner, minimizing our impact on landfills.

2. Using Non-Toxic Glazes

The glazes we use in our studio are non-toxic and food-safe, making them better for both you and the environment. Here’s why this matters:

Health and Safety: Non-toxic glazes ensure that there are no harmful chemicals released during the firing process or when using the finished pottery.

3. Energy-Efficient Kilns

Firing pottery requires a significant amount of energy, but we minimize our impact by using energy-efficient kilns and also have leuvre doors which helps provide natural air circulation without the need for an electric fan:

Modern Technology: Our kiln is designed with the latest energy-saving technology, reducing electricity consumption and emissions.

Efficient Firing: We wait until we have enough pottery before we fire the kiln, ensuring that we maximize each firing cycle and avoid unnecessary energy use.

4. Sustainable Studio Practices

Beyond our pottery processes, we implement sustainable practices throughout our studio:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: We recycle paper, plastics, and other materials used in the studio, and encourage our customers to do the same. Here's a few examples:

  • Boxes our stock comes in - many of these are used to post out your items and we use reuse packaging materials.

  • Bubble wrap - a lot of our pottery comes to us from the supplier bubble wrapped. We use this to wrap pieces in for posting out or when you pick up.

  • Bags - we encourage customers to bring their own bags when they come to pick up their pottery once fired. Also the money from any bags bought (we have to charge my law) goes to Grow Wild St. Neots to plant trees in the local area.

Eco-Friendly Supplies: Where possible our studio supplies, such as packaging tape and cleaning products, are chosen for their eco-friendly properties.

Avoiding Single Use Plastic and Disposable Items: The plates we use for paint pallets, while plastic, are the same one's we've had since opening in 2010, so we've already had 14 years of use from them and they're still (mostly) going strong!

5. Encouraging Eco-Friendly Habits

We believe in educating our community about the importance of sustainability in pottery. Here’s how we do it:

Eco Plate Competition Crafty Monkey ran

Workshops and Classes: We love a bit of upcycling at Crafty Monkey and occasionally run workshops that incorporate this eco-friendly practice, and of course painting a functional piece of pottery itself is sustainable as the item can be used for years to come!

Community Involvement: We have run eco friendly mug workshops and 'Save the Planet' competitions in and support Grow Wild St. Neots, a local environmental initiative helping to promote eco-friendly practices beyond our studio.

6. Creative Reuse Projects

We love to inspire creativity while being mindful of the environment. Some of our favourite projects include:

Upcycling Broken Pottery: Transform broken pottery pieces into beautiful mosaic art or garden decorations.

Using Natural Materials: Incorporate natural materials like leaves and flowers into your pottery designs, reducing the need for synthetic materials.

7. Embracing a Vegan and Vegetarian Ethos

Vegan and Vegetarian Commitment: At Crafty Monkey, our dedication to sustainability extends beyond our pottery practices. The owner is vegan, and most of our staff are either vegan or vegetarian. This is not a requirement to work at Crafty Monkey and a coincidence. Our commitment reflects our belief in compassionate and environmentally friendly living.

Vegan-Friendly Materials: We ensure that all materials used in our studio, our cleaning products and drinks we sell are free from animal products and not tested on animals. This aligns with our ethical values and supports our mission to offer cruelty-free pottery options.
