Sanding blocks are great to have around when pottery painting in case you make a mistake as it's a great way to remove the underglaze from the pottery.  Other sandpaper you have around the house will also do so it's not essential but if you paint pottery regularly then these are a great tool to have on hand! 
To use, wait until the paint drys and sand off the area you don't want.
